A recent directive by the Federal Ministry of Education, barring students under 18 from sitting for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination, has drawn criticism from Alh Abubakar Rajab, a concerned citizen. In a letter to the Minister of Education, Rajab argues that this policy could harm Nigeria’s youth and hinder academic aspirations.

Rajab cites potential detrimental outcomes, including cognitive decline, increased risk of counterproductive behaviors, and hindrance to early career aspirations. He also warns of adverse impacts on Nigeria’s educational and socioeconomic growth.

The letter urges the Ministry to reconsider the age restriction and implement alternative approaches, such as maturity assessments or preparatory programs, to ensure younger students are prepared for higher education.

Rajab’s appeal emphasizes the importance of educational flexibility and meritocracy, aligning with global trends in knowledge-based economies.
