The United States has announced plans to impose visa restrictions on Nigerian officials accused of undermining religious freedom, with some lawmakers calling for Nigeria to be treated similarly to Venezuela. The move comes amid growing concerns over violence against Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the restrictions would apply to individuals who “knowingly direct, authorize, fund, support, or carry out violations of religious freedom” and their families. The policy is part of a broader effort to address what Washington sees as a pattern of persecution in Nigeria and other countries.

Critics argue that the U.S. is using its power to pressure Nigeria, knowing that the country fears repercussions. However, some experts believe that if Nigeria resists these threats, the U.S. will learn to respect its sovereignty, much like South Africa’s president did when faced with similar threats to cut aid.

Nigeria’s government has denied allegations of religious intolerance, emphasizing its commitment to protecting all citizens regardless of faith. The country has faced violence from various groups, including Boko Haram and other extremist organizations.
