Anicet Ekane, a prominent opposition leader in Cameroon, has died in detention, sparking widespread outrage and accusations of medical neglect. Ekane, 74, was arrested on October 24 and held on charges of hostility against the state, incitement to revolt, and calls for insurrection. His party, the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM), claimed his death was a result of denied medical treatment.

Ekane’s health had deteriorated significantly in recent days, with his family and lawyers reporting severe breathing difficulties. Despite repeated requests, authorities failed to transfer him to a hospital for proper care. The government has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Ekane’s passing has triggered protests and condemnation from opposition groups and human rights organizations, who accuse the government of suppressing dissent. He was a key supporter of Issa Tchiroma Bakary, who disputed the October presidential election results, won by President Paul Biya.
