The Governing Council of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi has dismissed senior lecturer Dr. Usman Mohammed Aliyu from the institution’s service due to allegations of sexual harassment involving a postgraduate student. The decision was made during the Council’s 96th regular meeting on April 11, 2025, following a thorough investigation by the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee.

According to the dismissal letter, Dr. Aliyu was found guilty of an “indecent relationship” with Mrs. Kamila Rufai Aliyu, a postgraduate student in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The Council approved his dismissal with immediate effect, citing Chapter 3, Item F, I, (o) of the Senior Staff Conditions of Service.

The allegations against Dr. Aliyu included sexual harassment and threats to the student’s academic progress. Despite his denial, the investigation found him guilty of misconduct. The university has taken a firm stance against sexual harassment, demonstrating its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for its students [1].
