Abuja, Nigeria

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has directed the demolition of a residential estate allegedly constructed in violation of approved land use in the Guzape area of Abuja.

The decision was announced during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects across the capital city. According to the minister, the affected land had originally been designated for park and recreational purposes but was reportedly converted into a housing development without proper authorisation. He added that the land allocation would also be revoked as part of broader efforts to enforce the provisions of the Abuja Master Plan.

Wike cautioned developers against breaching planning regulations, noting that some individuals take advantage of perceived loopholes or assume that illegal structures could later be regularised when administrations change. He stressed that enforcement actions would be taken regardless of the status of those involved.

Beyond regulatory concerns, the minister used the inspection to review the progress of several key road projects expected to be completed in the coming months. He expressed satisfaction with work on routes linking emerging districts such as Karsana, Kubwa, Jahi, Gwarimpa, Kuje and Gwagwalada, describing road expansion as central to improving transportation and connectivity within the FCT.

The FCT Administration, he said, remains committed to balancing strict urban planning enforcement with the delivery of infrastructure aimed at enhancing mobility and supporting the city’s long-term development goals.
